Did You See The Sun Rise?

The third season of Magnum, P.I. began with a two-hour episode that aired on September 30, 1982. For many fans of this show, this compelling episode came to be one of their favorites, revealing a side of Thomas Magnum (played by Tom Selleck) not previously seen, with many flashbacks to Vietnam, and its powerful ending with a single pistol shot.

As private detective in Hawaii, Thomas Magnum relied on a military 1911 pattern Colt semi-automatic pistol. At a recent auction in California, one of the blank-adapted Colt pistols used by actor Tom Selleck in the show came up for sale, and wound up at the National Firearms Museum.

This Magnum, P.I. handgun is actually a 9mm Parabellum pistol, rather than the typical U.S. Army issue .45 ACP caliber. The 9mm chambering for this prop gun was selected due to better operation with easily-obtained 9mm blank cartridges, ideal for a propmaster responsible for reliable operation of prop guns on set.
